Solution workflow: from the simulation space to live teaching and on-demand learning
Previously, Relacart shared its Cross-Space Hospital Surgical Teaching Audio System Solution. More recently, Hospital Barros Luco Trudeau in Chile integrated an audiovisual system for its clinical simulation center, used to record medical training sessions and carry out post-session review and analysis. The audio portion of this system uses the Relacart TDN1 Dante networked digital microphone, and the installation is now officially in service.

The system covers three areas — the clinical simulation space, the conference room and the control room. Rather than operating as isolated recording and viewing points, the three form one organic whole that requires two-way, real-time communication. During a simulated scenario, the supervising expert should not simply watch through the glass: when a patient's condition suddenly changes, they must be able to speak up at once. Trainees, in turn, should hear the guidance and respond verbally while carrying on with the procedure, and the control room needs to follow everything in real time and step in quickly when necessary.
To achieve this, the design brings all three areas into a single digital link over the Dante network audio protocol. Each location needs just one network cable, which greatly reduces cabling, while Dante Controller allows remote management and delivers low-latency, multi-channel, two-way signal flow.
Clinical Simulation Space
The simulation space must capture every spoken decision exchanged during training, transmitting them live to the conference room for observation and discussion while archiving everything for later review. The challenge: the audio system had to pick up voices clearly, reject noise, and at the same time stay completely out of the way of the training itself.
The answer was ceiling microphones. Mounted overhead, they take up no desk or table space and avoid the tangle of handheld, lavalier or tabletop microphones that would obstruct trainees' movements during procedures — while still capturing voices across the entire area and filtering out equipment knocks, clothing rustle and air-conditioning noise.

Conference Room
The conference room hosts expert observation, live coaching and group debriefing. It is equipped with the Relacart TDN1 networked digital microphone console, from which experts can speak directly into the simulation space the moment a scenario changes; trainees receive the instructions through room loudspeakers and respond verbally, forming a full-duplex, two-way intercom. For debriefing, the room switches to local discussion mode, with speech routed only to the conference room's own sound system. The setup can later be extended with a remote video system for off-site review meetings.

The TDN1 chassis is CNC-machined from a single block — durable and elegant — and supports the Dante network audio protocol with PoE power. A local red/green indicator and multiple switching modes let experts toggle flexibly between always-on discussion and push-to-talk, preventing stray private remarks from reaching the simulation space by accident.
TDN1 also ships with the dedicated TDM software, which runs on computers and iPads to set EQ, SQ, high/low-pass filters, noise reduction and more, with fully customizable microphone indicator colors.

Control Room
The control room handles signal routing, recording and archive management. The whole audio system is controlled from Dante Controller software on a PC, which assigns the audio matrix and switches between scenarios as needed. Operation is simple enough that no dedicated technician is required — after a brief introduction, the medical team can run it themselves.

Because all signals travel over the Dante network, recordings are stored directly on the PC, ready for later review sessions. And compared with running a dedicated cable for every analog microphone, the wired Dante solution needs only network cabling — far simpler on the control-room side, and future simulation or debriefing rooms can be added without touching the core network architecture.
The system is now fully operational. The customer speaks highly of its reliability, its room to grow, and its convenience. The same blueprint can be replicated in surgical skills labs, emergency-care training, nursing scenario simulation and remote joint instruction.
